Another Way to Quiet Your Modem

25 Feb 04

In a previous tip, we explained how to turn off your computer's modem speaker. We suggested selecting your Internet connection in the Dial-Up Networking folder, choosing Properties, clicking on the Configure button, and then adjusting your modem speaker with the sliding volume control. Many TipWorld readers wrote in to point out that this doesn't work for all computers, and they suggested a universal solution. So we thought we'd pass it along.

Go to Start, Settings, Control Panel, and choose Modems. Select your modem in the upper box and then click Properties. Click the Connection tab and then the Advanced button. In the Extra Settings box, type

ATM0

Please note that the last character is a zero, not the letter 'O.' This modem string setting instructs your modem to remain quiet during the dialing process. Click OK twice and then Close to exit.
