I have a notebook IBM PIII 512K W98SE French.
What version of Windows do I have to buy?
Can you indicate me, in main lines, how proceeding?
Thanks for your help.
Xavier.

Your first step is to go to IBM/Lenovo's tech support site for your notebook
to see if there are XP drivers for all your hardware. If there are not,
then stop right there. You won't be able to upgrade without drivers.

Then it would be worthwhile to check with IBM/Lenovo to see if they have
upgrade disks for that model laptop.

If there are XP drivers, then download them and burn to CD-R since you will
need to install them after the operating system installation is finished.
Then decide whether you need XP Home or Pro (Pro if you must connect to a
domain, probably Home if this is your own personal machine) and purchase a
copy from your favorite online or brick-and-mortar store. It may be
difficult to find a copy of XP locally but I believe Amazon and NewEgg
still have them.

If you are going to do an upgrade, you should make sure all of your
installed programs are compatible with Windows XP before you do this. You
can upgrade from within Win98 but if something goes wrong and you need to
do a clean install, you'll need a real Win98 operating system disk (not a
restore disk) to use as qualifying media. So if you don't have one, buying
a full retail version instead of the upgrade version is a better choice.
