Every so often, a pop-up baloon tells me "There are unused items on
your desktop".

I know it shows signs of old age when you talk back to your computer,
but I want to say "So what - it is MY destop, and I want them there.
So go home already, Billy Boy, and leave me alone."

Is there anyway I can permanently stop Mr. Gates from telling me what
to do with my computer (short of going to Linux)?
And please don't tell me to click on each icon once every two weeks to
fool Windows into thinking I'm actually regularly using the programs
behind these "unused items".

Cheers! and Thanks!

Right-click a blank spot on your Desktop, click Properties on the menu that appears,
then click the Desktop tab, then click the |Customize Desktop| button.
On the General tab, remove the check from the box for "Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard
every sixty days", and click OK all the way out.

Right click on your desktop and select Properties from the menu.
Note: You can also go to Control Panel and double click the Display icon. This
should launch the Display Properties sheet.
In Display Properties, click on the Desktop tab.
On the Desktop page, click on the Customize Desktop button.
On the General page of Desktop Items, remove the check mark from the box next to
Run Desktop Cleanup Wizard every 60 days.
