What does being "enabled" mean? There is no firewall
software.

Desktop feature is present, and is checked (enabled!)

On the windows xp home system, when going to the
properties of my computer and then to the remote tab,
remote desktop is not a choice....what can be done? This
is a Gateway machine with I'm sure OEM software. I read
in some earlier notes that you need the full retail copy
of XP to make remote desktop "present", but for months and
months, we've been able to use the remote desktop and then
all of a sudden, it didn't work. Could an update have
caused it to no longer work? Thanks again.

XP Home can *NOT* act as a Remote Desktop host. That is the reason you do not see a Remote Desktop
feature in the Remote tab of My Computer properties.

If in fact the box is an XP Pro box then a couple of alternatives come to mind in an effort to get
the Remote Desktop feature back on the Remote tab of the My Computer properties...

1. Do you have a remotepg.dll file in your C:\Windows\System32 directory? If so, try reregistering
it using the command line that follows...

regsvr32 remotepg.dll

2. Do a repair install of Windows XP.

Everyone has been great...I'm trying to use XP Home as
simply a client...worked for months and now can't
connect. Tried multiple types of internet connections
(dialup and cable) to different ISPs and still, it can not
connect. No firewall, yet no connection. Any other
thoughts?

I'm with Al.

The XP home system can never have acted as a Remote Desktop host.

It can be a client--i.e; it can connect to an XP Pro machine.

You can also use the Remote Assistance feature to connect to a user at that
machine and do interactive help or troubleshooting.

Remote Desktop should show under start, all programs, communications.

Any chance you've reinstalled from the original CD since applying SP1, and
haven't re-applied SP1, or done a System Restore to a date before SP1 had

Hmm - I'd go to WindowsUpdate, via the links on your machine, and apply all
critical updates you are offered. If SP1 isn't among them, I think it is
already there. If you right-click on My Computer, and choose Properties, is
it mentioned in the wording under System: ?
