how does the number of typefaces present in a printer affect the quality of
printing. does the absence of a typeface in a laser printer or inkjet
printer mean that i will not be able to print fonts other than those present
in the printer.

You also posted this in the microsoft.public.word.printingfonts. I answered
there.

ROM fonts in laser printers was old school DOS technology. They relieved
computers with only a megabyte or so of RAM, a few dozen megabytes of
hard drive space and only a few dozen Mhz clock speed the effort of
transferring the font to the printer. Windows stores the fonts on the
computer's hard drive. Many ink jet printers have such primitive
circuitry, the computer's CPU (and software drivers provided by the
printer manufacturer) has to perform MUCH of the work load formerly
undertaken by laser printer electronics.
