single click mouse option lost Plus display issue

I can't get the single click option anymore. It is grayed out! After a
Microsoft update (10 of them). The mouse option will not let me change to a
single click. Only the double click is available. It worked just fine before
the updates and doing a restore did nothing.
Also the all normal windows display that showed the options on the left of
the file listings is gone. No matter what style is choose classic or XP
style. The window just shows all the files but no left side option display.
any ideas?
