Post subject: safe mode will not work??
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>basics (more info?)

hello,
im running win xp HE with SP2 all updates , 2 user accounts both with admin
priviliges.
today i booted into safe mode and clicked on the admin tab.instead of going
into safe mode , it promped me for a password but before i could do anything
, it rebooted and started as normal . i scanned for virus /worms/malware
with trend micro onlone and got 2 malware . im running avast pro up to date
Av .
i installed a program called CONNTROLL which is a program to limit user
access .I found it difficult to setup but even worse to try to remove . I
had an icon in the tray and would not uninstall as long as it was running
trere is no uninstall so i went to run /msconfig/services and stopped the
service then i rebooted and since there was no icon in the tray i was able
to access the program an delete the intire folder .since then , i have not
been able to access safemode .. any ideas on a fix?
Joe

You CAN'T just delete the entire folder and expect the system to work.
Installing programs modify everything with the system, install drivers,
DLLs, applications, ....

By just deleting the folder, all you did was have Windows not access the
application. You may have remnants leftover from the program, services,
hidden DLLs, applications, ...

Was there no Add/Remove program entry for uninstalling?

To really remove this now ... I would do a System Restore prior to the
installation of this program.

If you can get into regular mode, try reinstalling to the original
location - the one you deleted. This might restore the files that the
system is now looking for and can't find.

The version at the site below apparently does have an uninstaller, so you
should be able, once the system is running, to uninstall gracefully.
