can i create folders to put specific types of progs inside them as my all
progs from the start menu is too long and needs tidying up i.e put
photographic applications all together in one folder. thanks

Yes, you can do this. With XP, you need to work with two different sets of
start folders:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
C:\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Start Menu

Shortcuts under All Users will appear in every account's start menu.
Shortcuts in your start menu folders, only appear for your account.

Right click the start button, click "Explore". You'll be presented with the
Windows Explorer view of the Start Menu and sub-folders, programs, files
etc.

From there you can cut and paste the shortcuts and folders as you see fit.
