If you have only one phone line, and both your fax modem and answering
machine (and regular telephone) are connected to it, you can only
receive faxes if you can configure your fax machine to not answer
incoming fax calls. If your answering machine can't do that (and I
don't know any that can), you can buy a "fax switch" that will be the
only thing directly connected to your phone line. The answering
machine, regular phone, and fax modem are all connected to the fax
switch. The fax switch answers all incomings calls and determines which
device ought to handle the call, and routes it accordingly.
