Post subject: Could i put win2000 on spare 30 gig of current 'xp' hdd
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>configuration_manage (more info?)

I have winXP Pro sp2, running on an 80 gig HDD, just the 1 partition, (
whole 80 gig ) .. so , is it possible to put another parition on this Hard
Drive , somehow, and then.. Put windows2000 on The rest of the HDD, I have
30 gig left on the hard drive, so if i could put a partition, using the
30,up .. I wud want the win2000 on that.

I do nor want to reinstall 'xp' as i have all the updates and its running
fine, i just cannot seem, on google to find any way ov 'adding' a partition
to an already running partition with XP on it ..
Any Ideas Folks ... i have the 2000 disk waiting to set-up .... by the way,
I DO have a 10 gig spare HD i'm not using, could i use this, and what would
be the best ay of going about it ?

80 and 10 are both Maxtor .. i dont have a double connector 'ide' so i wud
have to use the 1 that goes to the DVD drive which is kinda impossible if
i'm booting from the win2000 disk.

Could I not just add a partition to my 80gig and put the 2000 on that ?

Cheers FRED C

It is possible but will require a little bit of time and work on your part.

First thing you need to do is to create the second partition. You've got enough space which is good. You need to get a
partitioning program to create it for you. There are commercial options both full retail and shareware, as well as freeware
options. I personally use the older PartitionMagic (8 for DOS) but there are plenty of others available. I don't know which is
best since I stopped looking a long time ago, but I've heard good things about Acronis and Ranish.

Here's a few promising free ones:

The Ultimate Boot CD has several:
http://ubcd.sourceforge.net/

This one is designed for resizing:

Whatever you pick, you will need to resize the XP partition down. You may want to make the XP partition (it's using 50GB?) about
60-70GB and give the last 10-20GB to 2000. Since you are manipulating the OS partition, the program will have to reboot and run in
DOS (or native) mode—you can alter the Windows partition while in Windows. It will have to move all files from the part of the disk
being freed up to the part being shrunken. This part can take a while, but you can probably speed it up by defragmenting
beforehand. You then need to create a new partition in the now unallocated space. You can do this with the partition program or
with Windows' own diskmgmt.msc. Either way, you need to choose whether to make it FAT32 or NTFS (you can pick which ever your XP
partition is.)

Now that you've got two partitions, you will be able to install Windows 2000. It's best to install the main OS last, but not
mandatory. You can pop in the CD and install 2000 as normal, specifying the second partition as the destination. Afterwards, you
can boot into it and set it up and so on. Once that is all done, you have to restore the XP boot loader so that XP takes over the
boot.

Don't forget to update the BOOT.INI file. Now reboot and you should be able to choose which OS to boot into.
