I had a hard drive crash and subsequently reinstalled xp home from a very
old cd. Afterwards I downloaded and installed service pack 2. After this I
could not view my monitor. So that I could once again see my desktop I then
reinstalled from the old xp cd. I then could see my desktop and then was
able to install a new graphics driver. Now my monitor settings are great
but my computer will not let me download any more updates. Explorer freezes
when I try to download from microsoft the service pack 2 update. Also, I
get a message saying that I already have the service pack installed but I
don't anymore since I reinstalled the old version. Windows automatic
updates just freeze up as well. How do I get the sp2 update to install when
my system thinks it already is installed. I know that it isn't installed
because when I try to use software that requires sp2 I get a message saying
that I need to update to sp2.

Any help would be appreciated.

Your catroot2 folder is probably corrupt.

You cannot install some updates or programs:

Pat, are you using Windows Update site for downloading SP2? If yes, try
and download
it from the Catalog if Mark's suggestion did not help.
http://catalog.update.microsoft.com/v7/site/Search.aspx?q=Windows%20XP...Service

You want the second entry in the column. Size of file 266MB
