XP home, pc Athlon64 3500+ 1GB RAM. IE6 loaded but running Thunderbird
mail, automatic XP updates.
Totally free of virus/spyware (daily checked/updated, verified by
occasional external on-line virus check)

1/ Unable to run "Help and Support" - yields an error window saying
"Cannot open because a system service is not running. Start the service
"Help and Support" (Catch 22!).

2/ "Internet Explorer" - takes several "clicks" to get it to open (and
update/mail prog which try to access in the background often cannot get
data - have to manually do it) Am connected via a router to a cable modem.

3/ Associated with 2/ - when I close down, there can be as many as 6
iexplore.exe progs trying to shut down, though they were not opened by
user nor visible as open windows on taskbar.

Start with the first one, Start>Run>type SERVICES.MSC>click OK
Scroll down to Help and Support, highlight it and click Restart the service.
Reboot to see if it holds.
Note: Also check if Windows User is started.
