Post subject: playback of .vob file extensions
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windows>vista>music_pictures_video (more info?)

I have digital video footage saved to a DVD +RW which I recorded on my DVD
recorder. I wanted to play around and see if I could copy footage from two
recorded DVD's, save them to my pc and then burn them to one disc. Whilst
investigating I noticed that if I click on one of the files (in explore) on
the DVD, default playback will start. However, when I took the DVD out and
attempted to playback the version saved in my hard drive, my default player
is launched but doesn't actually play back.

I don't want to go to all of the trouble of saving from both DVD's, burning
them to a DVD-R and finding that I can't play any of them back on either the
DVD player or my pc.

Any ideas why I can't playback? If I wanted to back up any recorded or
pre-recorded DVD's onto my pc what is the best way of doing so?

VOB files are DVD files and aren't really meant for local file system
playback. You can hack it together like that, but generally you're going to
actually need to investigate how to deal with these files if you want them
to work right. This won't Just Work : it's still a bleeding edge area,
sadly.
