What did Apple support say?
Make sure that all the relevant files and folders are actually gone.

I ran into this with one PC - it was three or so Quicktime registry keys
that defied deletion or modification. I did everything I could to take
ownership, get permissions, put on blindfolds.... nothing would work.
Booted to safe mode as admin, nada. Booted with BartPE, still could not
delete those b*&&^%s.
Finally ended up wiping the machine and installing from fresh (it had a
couple other issues as well, so I had multiple reasons to take such a
drastic step.)

I haven't figured out the answer to that yet, The last time I looked I saw
some 1130 items in the Registry for Quicktime and that's more than I wanted
to cope with.
Like you, I'd appreciate help with this.

Ramesh,
I already indicated yesterday that I ran the utility with apparent success
and this evening I installed QuickTime 7.1.3 without any problem whatsoever.
I am now a happy camper.
If Pixeyness is still following this thread, he or she should be happy.
Take care,
Steven
