Post subject: newbie asking about $ files
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>basics (more info?)

Apologies for butting in, more so as I know next to nothing about xp, but a
colleague has been asking how to resolve a problem.

xp (original as far as I know - not sp2) running out of disk space due to
what appears to be many unknown files named "$...", rather large and
numerous.

1/ Can they be deleted? (win9x they'd be temp files, nt server files)
2/ Where have they come from
3/ How does he stop their generation

Any help appreciated.

If they are _folders_ like "$NtUninstallK....$" under C:\WINDOWS , they
give the possibility to remove Windows Updates, should they have harmful
effects (like some updates has on some machines)... Most of them can be
removed, but they will stay on the Add/Remove list in CtrlPanel if removed
manually. An utility to remove them is found on Doug Knox' home page,
http://www.dougknox.com/ , WinXP Utilities, "Remove Hotfix Backu....."

If they are _files_, they almost certainly are temp files and may be
deleted....
