Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>basics (more info?)

In January 2005 I built my son a PC with following hardware:
Asus P5GD2 Motherboard, bios v. 1004
P4 3.0 GHz processor
I gig DDR2 RAM
MS IntelliMouse
Win XP Pro SP2

In December 2005 it started having a problem with the mouse locking up. The
mouse sems to be good, it works fine on my Abit AV8 system. My first thought
is this behavior is the result of some type of memory conflict, but
in fact I'm really not sure. Any suggestions?

What a nice Dad you are! Unfortunately, at this point all I can tell you
is that it could be software or hardware. It is unlikely to be the
mouse or a "memory conflict".

Since you say "son" and I'm sure you're just a young sprout yourself Wink
that means your son is probably a Young Person, start by doing the
normal scanning for viruses and malware:

If that solves the issue, you're done. If it doesn't, first look in
Event Viewer for clues. Start>Run>eventvwr.msc [enter]

Lockups can also be caused by hardware problems, and it doesn't matter
if the hardware is new. In fact, if hardware is going to fail it will
usually do so pretty quickly or go for years. Here are general hardware
troubleshooting steps:

In addition to Malke's response - MS have just released Intellipoint 5.5
software

Worth giving that a try.
