I have my power scheme set to go to screen saver and
eventually to shut the monitor off after 20 min. Recently,
that behavior has become intermittant. Sometimes it works
as it should, and sometimes, it just won't go to the
screen saver or shut down at all. When it is acting up, I
can manually request the screen saver to start up, but
then the desktop pops back on as though I had moved the
mouse or something. I believe this problem may be linked
to the fact that I use winmx & mxlinx a lot. I think that
when anything happens with them, the computer interprets
that as activity on my part. I could be wrong on the
cause, but I'm just guessing at this point. I'd appreciate
any suggestions anyone can offer, as I'm concerned about
the life of my monitor!

Some apps (such as Windows Media Player) explicitly disallow screen savers
from coming on. (In Media Player's case, you can turn this off via Tools \
Options.)
