It's admittedly inconvenient, but since you shouldn't ever have to
perform a restoration to factory settings more often then once every 3
or 4 years, I'd just bite the bullet. (If you need to restore more
often, there's something serious wrong with either the hardware or the
way you use your computer.) Otherwise, I can only suggest that you
raise the issue with HP, since it's their customized image recovery
that fails, and not a true WinXP installation.
