See www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm Line 2, left column. This REG file will modify the setting that controls this to 8000. See the instructions at the top of the page for information on using REG files. If you want to change the number to something smaller or larger, right click the REG file you downloaded and select Edit. Change both of the values for BagMRU Size. This is a hexadecimal number. You can do decimal to hex conversion using Calculator in Scientific View.

How much folders does it remember currently, in your system and how did you ascertain the value [if you did]?

Windows [XP] remembers 400 folder settings. When that number is reached some settings aren't retained any longer. You can change this to 8000 by adding this edit to the registry.

Run this edit, then reset your preferred folder options:
