Hi out there,
I started my computer today and my desktop is not appearing. I have the wall
paper but I cannot access any of my program. Right-clicking the mouse on the
desktop doesn't do any thing, neither does the left-clicking. I still can
access all my files and programs through the task manager that I access with
Ctrl-Alt-Delete and "new Task" under "Applications" but I do not know how to
restore the desktop.
Any idea how to get my Microsoft "Start" bar on the bottom and populate my
desktop with my icons? I already tried to restart the computer with a set up
of a month ago but same results. Yesterday, before turning the computer off
every thing was working fine.
Suggestions? |

What do you mean, did you use system restore? Can you boot in safe mode?

Hi Ron,
I tried the system restore with a July date but no changes. I also booted
the system in safe mode but I got a black screen with "Safe mode" written on
the lower two corners but nothing else was visible.

That is weird. It's like a driver or program loading at boot is corrupt and
is causing the system not to boot all the way. But, if it won't boot in
safe mode, that sort of shoots that theory down. Maybe somebody else has an
idea.

Ron,
even more weird is what is happening now. Through Task Manager's "New task"
I tyred "desktop" and got my desktop back. Unfortunately it is very unstable
and after a few seconds or max a minutes it turns on and off a couple of
times and then is off again. Do you know if I can do something while the
desktop is on or through the "START" button?

Sorry, messed up the last post.
I have a similar problem. No desktop, Start menu, and now Ctrl-Alt-Del
gives me a grayed-out Task Manager button, making it inactive. Prior to this
point, regedit was also inaccessible. Before I was left completely screwed,
Ad-aware was stuck on a registry entry and would not complete it's scan. Key
was:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Clients\StartMenuInternet
This is some kind of nasty worm or trojan. Anybody know what it is?
