I hope I'm posting in the right place, but I'm going crazy trying to
find out how to fix my stupid computer. Like so many, I've had nothing
but trouble with this Vista. I would never have bought it, but it was
all they were selling.
Anyway, here is what is going on:
I have an HP PC Media Center m7760n running Vista Home Premium (32
bits). I purchased this Media center because I'm a big photo/video
buff, and I figured this would be the best PC for me (yeah right!)
Anyway, I cannot use Windows Movie maker for my videos.. It crashes
because of some random program I don't even have on my computer. So, I
purchased Roxio's Easy Media Creator Suite 9 (Vista Compatible -- yeah
right)
After fixing a few issues with that, I thought I was all set. Now,
whenever I try editing videos, my computer screen goes black and my PC
beeps. It will come back for a second, disappear, and beep some more.
I get an error message that says my igfx drive has stopped working, and
yada yada.
I've researched the issue.
Apparently this happens a lot to people who play to war of the
warcraft. Supposedly, all I need is to update my igfx drive, and I'll
be all set? So I track down the update for my Intel 82945G express
Chipset Family Card-majiig
(http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/sb/CS-023621.htm) and it
tells me it's not validated for my computer.
I have no idea what else to do. Microsoft's Amazing problem resolver
has no solutions, and I can't find anything like this online (minus the
War of the Warcraft thing). While Searching through my Problem solver
program, I found this--(below)
Not sure what it means, but googling it brought me here, so I figured
I'd try it out. Please let me know if there is anything I can do

tekieted,
Several people have posted here with that BCCode 117 error. I've also used
google to search on this error code, and the only information I could find
leads me to believe that a BCCode is always related to a driver problem.
There are numbers other than 117 BCCode errors; e.g., 117 is not the only
such code error number. Even so, that fact doesn't matter, as it's likely
always some type of driver error, as best I could figure out. I'm no expert
in this field.
I've further concluded that the bad driver likely is an unsigned driver
installed on your computer along with some vendor's hardware or software, or
both. An unsigned driver means that it hasn't been tested by Microsoft to
verify that it's compatible with Vista. In other words, it's like not having
been signed off on by Microsoft (my way of looking at it).
So, how do you go about trying to find that offending driver? Vista
includes a utility that can search your hard driver looking for unsigned
drivers. That's a good way to get started in tracking down this problem.
Here is how you do it: Click on Start and then on Run. In the space
provided, enter: sigverif.exe and click on OK.
The utility will run and display all unsigned drivers it finds. Look it
over to see whether you notice something suspicious. This process isn't
easy, because what is suspicious? That's the crux of the effort. You have
to figure it out. You may get lucky and spot something because some vendors
use some letters in the names of their drivers which can identify the vendor.
For example, ATI (the video card maker) most often includes the letters ati
in their file names, thusly: atitool.sys (an actual example). But it's not
always that easy. Again, google can be used.
Another approach is to ask yourself whether this condition started after
some change you made, such as after installing some software, or after
installing some hardware along with its drivers. You get the idea. Take a
shot at it and see how you do. This likely is not a Vista issue, but rather
something incompatible with Vista running on your computer. That's been our
experience up to now.
Let us know what you find. Someone here may be able to be of further
assistance.

tekieted,
Hi. Have you had a chance to think about the questions asked in my first
response? If you have, or even it not, tell me what you think. Feedback is
essential in this area.
I have one more request to make of you. I can't find anything that tells me
what BCCode 117 means, specifically. Generally a BCCode indicates a driver
issue, but the various code numbers have specific meaning. As best as I can
tell, the BCCode is the same as a Stop code. Here is what I need to know
from you:
Please look at Event Viewer (right click Computer, select Manage, then
unfold Event Viewer). What I would like to know is whether you can find a
Stop code there. A stop code looks like this: Stop: 0x0000000x (where x may
represent a number and where 0s may include a number(s). If you find such a
code, I can then search on that code, since I can't find anything on 117.
Just review the various reports in Event Viewer to try to find a Stop code.
You may need to check the Properties (right click an entry, select
Properties) of some error message to get the full story. Can you do that?
Please post back.

Thank you--Sorry I didn't get a chance to respond last night.
I went to the HP website and found another driver update. I was so
happy, but when my computer started beeping at me again, I was just so
frustrated I had to walk away.
I haven't yet killed my PC. Haha!
I did run that scan thing, and the only thing that popped up was
avgclean.sys--that's the antispyware? Is it possible that could be
affecting my video card driver?

tekietek,
Thanks for responding. No, I doubt avgclean.sys is the cause of the
problem. But, just to make sure, can you stop AVG from running just to
confirm?
If you'd like to try something that doesn't require troubleshooting, try to
recall what you installed before the crashes started and uninstall it.
You're system hasn't been crashing all along, has it?
You said something about having problems with Roxio. Was your computer
crashing before installing Roxio? If not, uninstall Roxio to check whether
that is causing the issue.
Your video card can crash for various reasons, including bad video card, bad
video card drivers, and some other program and/or driver. When the latter
happens, it only appears that the video card is the problem, but it's only
the symptom. So, it's sometimes hard to tell. That's why there is this
approach called troubleshooting. There is also the approach called guessing,
which sometimes is the only thing that you can do.
Just bear with it. I'm sure we'll get to the bottom of it. Post back, and
keep your chin up.

Haha, I'm trying. This PC has just been one thing after the next. I'm
surprised I haven't tossed it out a window, yet.
The problem only occurs when I try editing a video in my Videowave
program (Roxio Software). Again, I had to purchase this software to
edit my movies because I can't edit them with Windows Movie Maker...
That crashes for a totally separate issue.
It's got to be a conflict between the program and the driver. I was
hoping there'd be some way to fix it, but I think I need to get a new
graphics card. I believe there is an open slot, but I hate opening up
PCs.
How can I correct the AVG thing?

tekietek,
I'd speculate that the AVG is of no concern in this matter. If it was the
problem, it would have been crashing you computer all along. That's my logic
anyway.
I would also conclude that your video card is not the problem. If it were,
same logic as above.
That leaves the only unresolved question: When did your computer start
crashing? Focus on that. Was it after you installed Roxio? We need to put
that question to rest before we can move ahead.
I'm sure there is a way of fixing this, but you need to focus on my
questions. I'm not there, so you need to be my eyes. All my questions are
unanswered. Post back.

tekietek,
The fact that the crashes occurred after you started using Roxio is a good
indication that that's your problem. Try uninstalling Roxio to see whether
that act resolves your problem.
If the crashes stop, then you can conclude that Roxio has a compatibility
problem with Vista. To resolve that issue, contact Roxio or participate in a
user forum there at the Roxio site to see whether this issue has been
addressed. Other users should know. Post back.

I realize this was posted about 7 months ago but I hoped I could add my details for a resolution. I noticed today when creating a website my monitor was not refreshing as it should - ex. when I click on a property window in dreamweaver I see a blank area but if I click in the blank area the individual properties will appear.
Here's the info I found:

Update your video drivers. Since this is onboard graphics, get the
latest drivers from either the OEM's website (HP, Dell, etc.) for your
specific model computer or, if this is a generic/self-built, from the
motherboard mftr.'s website.
If updating the drivers doesn't help, you may have a failing video card
(chip).
