Thanks for your response, here is further details, I had the hd partitioned
into two seperate partitions, only one partition has been affected, the other
one is just fine, that strikes me as wierd.
I visited the makers web site and downloaded some utilities, so far the
drive test just fine, Only the short test, the problem is the one partition
affected has lots of data on in it that I would like to get back, but xp says
the part is not formatted, I guess I could take a look at some undelete
software, any other suggestions?

I'm gonna run the other longer test software after I get home from work,

The best "undelete" tool is your backup. Unfortunately
many people defer the implementation of a good backup
scheme until they suffer a major disaster. Some partition
undelete program may be of assistance here, e.g. Acronis
RecoveryExpert.

After dealing with this issue, consider buying a 2.5" disk
and an external USB case to match. It would be a low
cost but highly effective backup medium. Remember to
test your backup scheme immediately after setting it up,
and then again twice each year. Without such tests it
would be close to useless.

Thanks, I do have Acronis TI, I was not aware they had recovery tools , I
will check it out ASAP, I really appreciate it!

well I bought some drive utilities from Acronis, it's new to me so maybe I
just don't see how to use it, but so far it's a piece of junk, it only sees
one HD and of course it's not the one with issues.

I did get the makers utilities and it passed all the tests, I was able to do
a quick format so I can explore the drive, it just baffles me the drive is
acting just fine, what the heck happened?

I do remember sending 3 files on that drive to a secure shredder, which
makes 5 passes to delete them, and I didn't see any errors at that time, but
the next day is when it blew up.

happily most of the data on that drive I can live without, and or have
recent backups, I just would like to know what happened to cause this?

I have use SpinRite since it first appeared in the DOS days to test and
fix hard drives. The last time I used it was to fix a master drive that
suddenly wouldn't boot. It was too late for Ghost to work because of
the errors on the drive. After running SpinRite on the drive I was able
to clone the drive to a new hard drive saving me many hours of effort
along with the data that hadn't been backed up.

Thanks Mike I will check into that.
just an update, I did a quick format, windows sees the drive just fine and
can save files to it just fine.
however PM8 for some reason still says it's BAD, and won't read it. so I
went thru a LONG formal format, and so far I haven't had the time to test it
again, I think I know what happened, I had ACRONIS TI set to save my full
system backups to a partition made on that drive, I think the backup
partition ran out space, and it overwrote the data partition.
