OK, maybe I'm not explaining this right. I have Windows XP installed on my
computer at work. Not my choice but I have to live with it. I've added an
address bar to my taskbar, so I can type in a URL without having to launch
IE first. I have the same thing on my computer at home (Win2k) and it works
with no problems. But on WinXP, if I type a URL in that address bar, IE
cannot find the site--doesn't matter what site it is, it can't find it. It
doesn't seem like it even looks, because the "can't find" dialogue box comes
up right away--there is no "page not found" error like you usually get when
you type in an invalid URL. But, if I open IE and type the URL in the
address bar there, I can go to any site.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

For a comparison -- to help know where we stand -- what happens if you click
Start | Run and type a URL in the Run box?

Also, can you give us one example of a URL that doesn't work (just one
example) and of how you are typing it -- keystroke for keystroke. Thanks.

Hi Jim,

I'll try launching from the Start menu on Monday. An example:

www.cnn.com

Up pops a box that says 'cannot find the internet site http://www.cnn.com '
with an OK button. I can't remember the exact error message, but like I
said it's not even looking.

If I launch IE and type in www.cnn.com it goes right to--guess where--CNN's
site.

Try this as a sample target line for your shortcut:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" www.cbsnews.com

Hi Maureen,

It's not shortcuts that are causing me problems, although I will admit that
I didn't try creating a shortcut on the desktop. I think I'll wait until
Monday and post back from work with more info, just so I can try these
things as they come up.
