How many folders can you have i Windows XP? I just read in a computer magazine that the upper limit was 8000 (maybe 8000 local and 8000 network folders). This was an article about loosing information about customization of folders.
(The following article is about the same: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813711 )
If the magazine is right about maximum 8000, I already am over the limit! What is the consequences?

See this:
http://snipurl.com/7xlv

If this is true for FAT32:
Maximum number of files and subfolders within a single folder:

65,534 (The use of long file names can significantly reduce the number of
available files and subfolders within a folder.)

And NTFS doesn't even list such a limitation in the same article...
Then this 8000 folders limit thing you present is a bunch of malarky.

By the way - the article you gave is for "remembering settings of a view for
a folder and setting how many of these to remember" not "how many folders
you can have".

There is no limit on the total number of folders.

However there is a limit on a FAT32 volume of 64K *entries* per folder. Note
that I say "entries," not "files and folders" because files and folder with
long file names take multiple entries.

With NTFS the limit is *much* larger--large enough that for all intents and
purposes there is no limit.

No, you've misread these articles. The issue here is not with how many
folders you can have, but with how many folders Windows can remember Windows
Explorer customization settings for.

No offense, Gerry, but there's enough impersonation in the newsgroups that
I just make it a standing policy here to never click any shortened URLs. I
suppose that I could check headers for authenticity but that takes time - a
precious commodity that I would rather spend differently.

If an URL is gosh awful long, I post navigation directions to get to it: Go
to this site, click on this, then that and so on. I'd rather spend the time
it takes to write up those directions for something else too. However, I
don't like to click snipped urls, so I refuse to use them in writing my
messages.

Thanks! (I have NTFS)
But it may be right then, that Windows Explorer cannot remember customization settings for more than 8000 folders?
(I did not misread the article, but this is probably what they meant to write.)

I want to be quite honest and say that any OSes ability to remember more
than 8000 customization settings for FOLDERS in the file system - just does
not seem to be a bad thing. After all - for anyone to notice it cannot
remember more than 8000 customization settings for folders - well - they
either have to be REALLY intense in what they do or they really need to find
something else to obsess about. (IMHO)
