The user has just called from a trade show. The external monitor that he
has attached to his laptop (Sony PCVRS511) is not working. He reports that
when the laptop boots up into XP Home, both monitors appear to work
momentarily, but then the external monitor only shows a blue screen (he says
that at times the blue has gone away and it appears black). He told me that
in display properties he was able to make the 2nd monitor identify itself
with a "2" on the screen.

Any ideas?

Try cycling through the LCD/external/both options on the laptop. Or
perhaps the external VGA connector got broken.
