In XP Home when I share a drive on the network, I have to share it with
everyone or not share it at all. I only want certain users to have access to
this drive. It does not seem possible in Windows XP home.

Sadly true, as "Simple File Sharing" is all the WinXP Home offers.
This problem can be addressed (in a left-handed manner, as it were) by
using NTFS file permissions on the host computer to control access to
the contents of the share.

This is as good as any....

There is a windows.hardware group, but they'll tell you the same thing:
"Check with the manufacturer of your particular hardware for the device
drivers."

This isn't a hardware group. I think Mr. Murray posted to the wrong thread.
Mike, you are correct that you don't get the ability to set fine-grained
permissions in XP Home as you do in Pro. You don't set permissions on a
hard drive but on a partition, directories, and/or files, but that is
probably what you meant.

I Googled for "permissions in XP Home" and got some links that may help you,
but as is said in the first link found, these methods are not supported and
if you mess them up, you can lock yourself out. Of course, you can lock
yourself out if you don't know what you're doing in Pro, too.

It really depends on your situation whether this is a good solution for you.
If you have a home computer and you are just trying to protect some private
stuff from the rest of the family, then the easiest thing is to zip the
files and password the zip archive.

If this is a business, then you would be better served to upgrade to Pro and
then you will have the ability to create users and user groups, set
permissions, use Group Policy to set restrictions, etc.

If you'd like more help, then post back with a description of your computer,
your situation, and what your end goal is.
