Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>general (more info?)

I've just bought a new pc and have begun loading printer drivers etc. I put
it into standby last night and when windows booted this morning I got this
error message:
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file F:\$Mft. The data has
been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or
network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."

I don't know what the file is. Does anyone know? Also, I doubt it's a
hardware failure but it's possible. And I don't have a network connection set
up yet.

Should I be getting in touch with the retailer or is it a common, easily
solved problem?

Thanks

Hi Millie,

Without knowing more, it's hard to say what that means.

I have to ask, but did you begin an installation of printer drivers, and
before the installation, left the room to finish it's job until morning? I
*always * like to be around during all s/w and h/d installations. To see
how the failure occurred, at what point, and with any brief error messages
can go a long way to solving the problems.

At this point, I would look in Add?Remove programs in Control Panel, just in
case there is something along lasts night install you can un_install. Then
you could try to re-install your driver fresh, while keeping an eye on it.

If this happens again, please post back with as many specifics as possible,
e.g. what hardware are you trying to install (make and model), are these the
correct drivers and do you have the driver name and revision number. Also
please quote *any* error messages you may receive verbatim, as sometimes
these message say it all. Please post back.

I tend to be the "village idiot" here at times, so someone with the needed
expertise will need to stop by, as they so often do.

Please be patient-these responses can and do come from all over the world.

Hello Curt

I was installing updated ActiveSync software before I put my pc into
standby. I am 98% sure it had finished installing. I'll do as you suggest and
uninstall and reinstall. Thanks "village idiot"! I appreciate your response.
