Can anyone help me regain access to my Control Panel???

I must have picked up some kind of bug off the net, now my Start menu does
not display a Control Panel link, only a Set Program defaults... link. Whben
I click on this it gives the error message "Operation cancelled due to
restrictions on your computer, ...check with administrator". If I try to
access Control Panel from My Computer I get the same error message. I have a
single home computer with only one account running, I tried to switch to
administrator account to see if one had been set up remotely, but there is
only one account showing.
I run AVG and Dr Antispy wirus ware. I also paid for and ran
winAntivirusPro, which seemed to be the start of many problems with my
system. I finally got rid of it and all it's automatic installs and updates,
through a combination of AVG, Ad-aware, and Dr Antispy, but I now have this
access problem to my Control panel.
Once before this happened while I was struggling with winAntivirus, and when
I reinstalled winAntivirus, I magically regained access to my Contrll Panel.
However due to the problems with that program I don't want to reload it.

Many thanks if you can help.

Hi

I have had the same problem after loading and running Norton 360 last week.
It has only affected the administrator account. I have access to control
panel on a non administrator account. Also looking for a fix as Symantec has
been of no help just sending me to MS who have nothing on the knowledge base.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing Messenger Plus, whose ads for

owe it to the author. See also:

Hey,

I have encountered the same problem. I don't know where it came from. I
was running e-trust anti virus software which it seemed to bypass. I ran
Trend 'Housecall' online scnner and it detected a number of problems but said
they had to be manually removed, but when I tried this it logged me off the
web. I ran the new Windows Trial Version of LiveOneCare and it seemed to
detect the problme but sent a message to Microsoft indicating 8 virus/trojan
issues that it did not recognise and could not fix for me.

I have control panel gone of my system. I tried to access Windows system
access defaults and received the same message as you did.

When this started I received a message on my screen stating that my computer
was under threat from spyware and virus and that I should log into an
antispyware site to do a free scan. The site then defaulted to home page on
IE7 and I couldn't remove it. The site appeared to come from Latvia. I
suspect it is dubious.

I am going to contact Microsoft in Australia to seek help. It appear this
could be a new and very powerful threat.

Platinum Knight

Hey dentalboston,

No success in resolving yet. Sent email to microsoft and they emailed a
patch to resolve but this didn't work. Guess it's back to microsoft for help
- this time by phone I think.

Will write further if solution found.

Exactly what happened to me!! I downloaded the newest version of Spybot and
since I ran it I have got no more of those spywear messages . Then I was
able to get rid of the viruses. My computer seems to be running okay, but I
still cannot find my control panel. And if I right click on my desktop and
hit properties I still get the message that I have no access. How do I get
my control panel back??

Spybot may be blocking it. Try disabling Spybot.

I restated my computer and all of a sudden my control panel was back! But
now evertime I start up I get a message: cannot find
C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe Spybot is also still notifying me of
changes when I start up and I'm not sure whether I should accept them or not.
I'm thinking I may have authorized something I shouldn't have.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.
