this behavior has just begun, my computer will turn off, randomly. and to
restart, i need to unplug the computer from the wall then push the on button.
at about this same time, i noticed that my power mangement settings aren't
working and also my screen saver doesn't come on, so i suspect a windows
problem. any comments or suggestions will be helpful. thanks.

I agree with Bob I. You most likely have a hardware issue, possibly
with the power supply. Overheating is another likely suspect.

Good luck

On the contrary, random turning off is almost always a hardware problem. I'd
suspect overheating, power issues, or RAM issues.

Not related to your problem, but as an aside, Sony is the company who made
your computer, not your CPU. Sony doesn't make CPUs; your CPU is almost
certainly made by either Intel or AMD.

I'd suspect a hardware problem. Perhaps the powersupply is giving up.

Functions in the power supply 'system' exist to lock out a system to
protect that 'system'? That function is reset by unplugging the
computer.

As others noted, that failure is typically hardware. How to find
the problem? Two minutes with a 3.5 digit multimeter should either
answer your question OR provide numbers so that others can report the
suspect. Procedure was posted previously in "When your computer dies
without warning....." starting 6 Feb 2007 in the newsgroup

In your case, the most important numbers are on purple, green, and
gray wires before and when power switch is press; both before and
after AC plug has been disconnected / reconnected. Without those
numbers, then every reply can only be speculation.
