capturing audio from a video clip

As an educator I often find video snippits (such as *.avi) on line and
download to show in class. Up 'till now I have used a microphone connected to
a hi fi headset to capture the audio (directly) from my speaker that
accompanies the video. The resulting sound, however, is not very good. Can
anyone suggest how the audio might be captured internally or directly, that
is, not from the speaker output? Any suggestions along these lines would be
greatly appreciated......Thanks

I've had an opportunity to try save2pc and it works fine with a youtube
video file as does vixy. I really had no difficulty and the audio was as good
as the original. However due to the much of the subject matter which I seek,
many of my clips come from resources that neither save2 nor vixy accept. As
an example see:
http://www.space.com/php/video/player.php?video_id=b011031_sp_fermi2. The pro
version, though accepting many more sites, does not cover the ones that I
need other than youtube. Thus, if a more general program exists, I'd be
pleased to try it out. In that regard any and all ideas are welcome, and
