Post subject: can not apply printer share
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>print_fax (more info?)

I have an XP (SP2) system with an HP 1300 attached. I would like to share it
with a second machine on the network.

File and printer sharing is enabled. I go to the "sharing tab", select
share this printer and type in a name for the shared printer. Then I click
apply. When I close this box, the little hand showing sharing does not
appear under the printer. WHen I go back to the sharing tab, it still says
"do not share this printer".

Where else do I need to set things for the printer to be shared??

Any help is greatly appreciated

There are restrictions on what you can use as a share name. IIRC, it's
<=12chars and no special chars, including spaces.

Is it XP Home or Pro and how many other printers and PCs are you already
connected to with the PC in question?

The system is XP Home. He is connected to a Designjet 800 (thru a HP jet
direct box) and an 8150 (also jet direct) and at least one other printer on
another system in the network. He has access to a Windows NT 4 server. His
user has administrator rights. The printer hooked to his system (that I can
not get to share) is and HP1300 connected parallel.

Sounds like you are out of connections.... XP Home has a 5 connection
limitation (XP Pro has 10)

Does the count go both ways? If an XP home machine is connected to 1 server
drive and 3 network printers and has one printer physically connected to it,
is that 5 or 4?
