Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>work_remotely (more info?)

I have Error 678 when trying to VPN to my corporate server.

Googling shows that I am not alone in this, however, my problem isn't
connected with the router(s).

I have two laptop computers, both with XP Pro SP2. Both connect to my
home network OK, and both can surf the internet.
But, only one of them can connect to the VPN. Both are trying to use
PPTP.

I have turned off windows firewall and un-installed any antivirus or
third party firewalls, but I cannot get my other laptop to connect!
I know the username and password are correct, and I checked that all
settings are identical.

So, what could the problem be?
I know that my network infrastructure is OK because I have one laptop
which works fine!

Any suggestions? Registry hacks, re-installation, services to run etc
etc,

Suggestions please.

Regards

Thanks, but this is applies to the server end. My VPN server is
capable of multiple connections. This has already been tried and
tested.
No, the problem I have is specifically related to the VPN client. I
have just noticed that my laptop is running XP Pro version 2002 SP2. I
don't know if the "2002" makes a difference because my other (working)
laptop is plain old XP Pro SP2 !

Usually, with dsl/cable routers - only one PPTP/VPN connection is allowed
through at a time.
Are you saying that one can connect and THEN the other cannot - are are you
trying to connect at different times?

I am trying at different times.
The other laptop isn't even switched on at the moment. So, I am only
using one VPN connection at a time.

I have seen a suggestion that if I do 'netstat -a' from a dos prompt I
should see port 1723 LISTENING.
I don't see 1723 in the list!
Should it be there? and how do I get it in the list?
Is it a service which I need to start?

I discovered that 1723 will only be in the list for the VPN server. I
am using XP Pro as the VPN client, and a Draytek Vigor ADSL router as
the VPN Server.

Furthermore, my problem seems to have gone away.
On Sunday morning the VPN started working on the errant laptop! I
don't know why, it just worked after a good nights sleep.
I could really do with an explanation though. Was the internet quiet
on Sunday morning giving my ISP the ability to route my VPN traffic
through? Who knows?
