It has nothing to do with its being familiar, and there's nothing special
about Window XP in this regard. Neither Windows XP nor any other version of
Windows has ever come with Word nor with any other significant application
software.

If your previous computer, running an older version of Windows, came with
Word, it was because the vendor who sold it bundled it as part of the
package he sold you, not because that version of Windows came with it. Some,
but not all, vendors do the same with Windows XP.

If you want Word, you need to buy it, either alone, as part of Microsoft
Office, or, most inexpensively, as part of Microsoft Works Suite.
Alternatively, you can acquire another less expensive or even free word
processor, such as that included with WordPerfect Office, StarOffice, or
OpenOffice.

No Windows OS has ever included Word. You have to go buy it.

An addendum to what I wrote below:

I replied to the text of your message, in which you asked about Word, but I
now see that in the Subject line, you asked about Works. Word and Works are
two different products, and if it's Works you want, note that it's
considerably cheaper than Word. The Works word processor is much less
capable than Word, but it's possible that it may be fine for your needs.

But neither Word nor Works comes with any version of Windows.

Some vendors have bundled Works with their machines, but as others have
pointed out Works is not part of any Windows Operating System.
