Hi there,

When i go to shut down my pc it goes through the motion of saving settings,
shutting down but then it stutters and reboots itself and comes back to life.
the only way i can shut down is by the power button on the back.

When i start the pc back up i would expect it to ask me to scan the hard
drive because it did not shut down properly, but no it goes throught the
normal start up process with no faults.

Anybody got any answers ?

Thanks,

1. Make sure the computer is virus/malware-free:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

2. Go through this shutdown troubleshooter:
http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

In addition to Malke's suggestions open Control Panel - System -
Advanced and click on the Settings button in the Startup and Recovery
(bottom) section. In the Startup and Recovery window click on the
checkbox for "Automatically restart" to clear it.

Something may be triggering a "system failure" class error when
Windows tries to shut it down. If this is the case then this change
will result in an error message rather than a restart and the content
of the error message should identify the culprit.

Good luck

See MVP Jim Eshelman's Shutdown Troubleshooter for Windows XP at
http://aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm and click on the "Reboots on
Shutdown" link in the left side column.
