I'm wondering if I can uninstall Windows XP SP3 & install Windows XP2,
without having problems later? The reason for this is: I'm unable to run
Windows Movie Maker; this program requires having SP2 to run. Please help.

You can go to the Control Panel's Add/Remove programs
to uninstall SP3 and you will then be back to SP2. However
there is a very large System Restore point file create when
you first installed SP3 and if the SP3 install was done weeks
ago this file/Restore Point most like will no longer be available.

I didn't know Movie Maker v2.1 doesn't work with SP3. Is there a
compatibility list or better yet an incompatible list? So people don't
have to go through all of the trouble of installing SP3 and then learn
later they really need SP2 instead.

To the original poster.
I think is interesting the interpretation people put on the specs. "Requires SP2 must mean you need
to remove SP3"
That is like saying you must have 200 horse power engine to go up a hill, since I have a 300 hp
engine, i will have change my engine back to a 200 hp if I want to go up that hill.

I suspect there was something wrong with the system rather than the need to downgrade. Fix the SP3
or Movie Maker problem.

Although I don't use Movie Maker, and don't know anything about it, it
is *highly* unlikely that it requires SP2. Almost certainly, wherever
you read that, it simply means that *at least* SP2 is required.

Well maybe you are right about WMM, but there have been reported
problems with other applications. OE6 autocleanup stalls on folders.dbx
for example if you upgrade to SP3. I also noticed that MS EWF isn't
protecting SP3 from writes to the system drive. I am still investigating
why that is.

OE6 autocleanup??? You mean folder compaction? I haven't had any such
problems here (using SP3 and OE6), and I compact those dbx folders
routinely.

I'm using WMM with XP SP3. No problem here.

Yes that is what I mean. And if you wait until it tells you that it
needs to compact (counter hits 100 in the registry), it will hang on
folder.dbx. This only happens with SP3. And since Microsoft has dropped
support for IE6, no bug fixes are planned. If you compact routinely
before the message that it needs too, you should be fine.

Well, I've never waited until it got to that point! But if that is indeed
the case, how do you get OE back working again??

Frankly, I'm quite surprised no one else has commented on this in here. If
it true for all folks with SP3 and OE, I would think there would be a ton of
posts on this!

Windows XP MCE 2005; SP3 here. I've had MSOE hit the 100 mark at least three
times, now; and I've never had the compact process hang on 'folder.dbx'.

Which version? I have Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp3_gdr.090206-1234) :
Service Pack 3), and it runs under Windows XP MCE 2005; SP3 without a hitch.

Bah. Just re-read the "About" info box; that was all the OS version stuff.
Here is the WMM version stuff: 2.1.4026.0.
