Why do you want to update printer drivers and additional HP "printing:
software? It is not a crisis to not have the latest drivers and most
HP drivers / software are not a "requirement" to have XP functioning.

And Windows Update does not state that a driver is problematic but
lists out a revised driver provided by Microsoft, which usually might
be out of date. Rule of thumb, if the driver(s) ain't broken don't
fix them and stay away from Windows Update driver updates.

Windows DID indicate that this driver is problematic - that's why I selected
to update it. I haven't had problems with MS hardware updates in the past,
but I went to HP anyway, and am unsure which one(s) will fix the indicated
problem.

Optional hardware updates

Hewlett-Packard - Printing - hp color LaserJet 5550 (DOT4)
Windows Update recommends installing this update because the device on your
computer to which this driver applies appears to not be working properly.

First of all never ever download an update for a piece of non microsoft
hardware off their update site.
The place to look for HP printer updates is the HP website.
You have the model # of the printer and do a search on the HP site
http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lan...n&cc=us

or install the original driver that came with the printer

Which is the reason for my original question: which of the multiple pieces
of software listed on the HP site (see my first post) is the one I actually
need?
In particular which of these?

HP Color LaserJet 5550 PCL6 Driver 61.082.61.41
HP Color LaserJet 5550 PCL5 Driver 61.082.61.41
HP Color LaserJet 5550 PostScript Driver 61.082.61.41
HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL5 5.0
HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PCL6 5.0
HP Universal Print Driver for Windows PostScript 5.0

WinXP on the PCs, Server 2003 on the server.

Depends entirely on which "print language" YOU want to install.
