Windows Defender conflict with Norton Internet Security 2007

Dear Ben,
You aren't kidding. In the three attempts to remove it, they had to use
their own tools from their site and then I had to (didn't want to) remove
from registry. (run-regedit). We had to remove from about 5 places anything
with the name symantec.
When I first installed NIS 2007, it wouldn't proceed further until I removed
windows defender. I removed it immediately.

I really wanted to keep it. I had so much trouble with my previous
computer, I had to buy another. I hired a microsoft certified tech(last year
for 9 hours one day..............don't ask what that cost. I wanted to
safely transfer it to this computer. This is my 7th one.

Whenever there are issues, I always make visual copies of what I'm seeing on
my event viewer and saving it.

I'm waiting for the next call from a supervisor at Norton. Basicallly
everything is in a "go" position. The only issue I see is on my
start........all programs...........norton internet
security................(It has two listings)The latest has a arrow showing a
dropdown or whatever one calls it. The other shows an error. Norton wants
to use remote assistance. I'm not comfortable with that.

What do you mean by keeping restore points up to date. What do you mean by
a disk image of what? I also have an external hard drive(250 gig).

unfortunately I have read
numerous postings on the issues
with Norton.

Of course, not everyone has
issues with it. And at one time
I too had bought Norton, when
it was a youngling... But I experienced
problems when I upgraded and decided
that the costs to me for not using Norton
was much less than the costs of loosing
time, data and the pain of frustration.

I think Norton is bloatware and exceeds
the basic needs for basic computering.

However, Norton is exemplery software for
giant computer systems...

I can't really say what you should do
with what you have. If it were possible
to get a refund of your money, then this
would be my primary suggestion.

The best thing is to get your monies
worth out of the Norton people. Then
maybe if they can't make it work, they
can issue you a refund/credit/rebate of somekind.

Until then, I was suggesting to make
backups of your system. That way you
will not be left out to dry with nothing
but a failed system.

Disk imaging is my preferred method of
making copies of the harddrive as a
backup. You should explore methods
of preserving your data, since you already
know that your data can be inadverdently
jeopardize by incompatiable software
or malicious software or simple user error.

I did mention restore points previously
as a way to proetect your system as well.
But now that I remember, restore points
and Norton is like oil and water and have
learned from prior posting that restoration
via the windows restore feature fail because of
Norton and vice versa.

Just be sure to make copies of
your important doc's. Then besure
to press the Norton people for results
or authorize a credit to you.

i'll be watching for your results....

btw: you didn't make any errors for
considering buying this software because
who could know that your pc could not
shake hands with it. Just wait and see
what they will say or do for you....

Thanks so much for your help Ben. I'm hoping to get some kind of credit for
my loss of time. Maybe they can give me two more years of protection for

Download SymNRT.exe from Symantec web site.
It should remove all Symantec/Norton entries from
the registry.

Thanks for the info fg. We did that twice. I even had saved the symNRt on
the desktop just in case. Even with doing this, we still had to go to
regedit and remove the symantec still on the computer registry.
We also did a backup copy of the reg on the desktop just in case.

Things seem to be working okay now, but thank you for your offer of
knowledge. Removing their program and using symNRT was absolutely necessary.
The only problem that still exists is there is a listing in start-all
programs of Norton Internet Security that keeps giving the same error. At
the bottom in All Programs in a folder of NIS which shows the extended
/dropdown of the program. I keep trying to take a picture of it and put it
in my event viewer, but (alt print screen and accessories-paint control v),
but it won't let me. I will use my digital camera to record this.

Other than that everything seems to be working okay. Thank you again.
