Vista x64 suddenly verrrrry slow, cpu maxed out.. even on ..

I had a perfectly working Vista install.. so i backed it up with Acronis..
then restored it on a bigger drive.. did the whole insert Vista setup DVD to
repair the boot process.. and it boots up... once everything is loaded it
stays horribly slow and with cpu at 100%...

Seems to be mostly svchost.exe, related to dcom launch process and plug n
play as the services attached from what i can tell.. but i'm not sure why it
would suddenly get dog slow..

For about a week on the other harddrive i've ran x86 Vista just fine and
runs smooth.. so i swap drives to this one and this is what results.

I also tried reinstalling onto that drive from scratch.. but even once i
make it through setup (which GRinnnndds through).. it does the downloading of
updates which literally took like 2 hours or more to complete...

So i'm guessing that x64 suddenly doesnt like something (hardware?) in my PC
but i'm not sure why, as x86 runs like a dream...

Anyone have any thoughts or similar experiences?

Using Acronis and restoring to a drive which is not plugged into the same
SATA connector or the same IDE setup (slave, master) is always a risk as
Windows stores that info in the registry and you can get conflicts.
Don't know of any reason you should have problems reinstalling from scratch
if you wiped you hard drive and set up a new partition to install on.
