Machine is a Toshiba Qosmio with an Intel 3100 (I believe) video adapter. I
have the laoptop screen up and a Sony Trinitron monitor plugged into the
SVGA port. I am unable to change the resolution on the Sony monitor while
using it in a dual monitor configuration - when I set the screen resolution
to anything other than 1024x768 and click <apply> the screen flickers, the
resolution entry stays the same and I am asked if this is the resolution
that I want to keep, click within 15 seconds.

Does Vista just not support changing the resolution in a dual screen
configuration on a laptop?

Vista does support multiple monitors. Go ahead and select yes when you're
asked if you want to keep the current setting and see if the flicker
continues. If so, you can always back out. If that doesn't help, go to the
Intel site and grab the latest driver that supports your computer.

Next steps:

This may also be a refresh problem, if your 2nd monitor is a CRT and not an
LCD. Use the monitors menu buttons and make sure you are selecting anything
above 60 MHz. 72 usually works fine. Check the cable, try a 2nd one if
possible.

Provide more details. I'd like to know if you are having trouble with a crt
or lcd.

The flicker is the one-time flicker that is expected when attempting to
control the resolution - not an ongoing flicker.

Drivers were updated first.

The external monitor I am plugging into the back of the laptop is a Sony
Trinitron A240. Vista will allow me to run this monitor in 1024x768 only -
when I select any other resolution from the list of available choices the
screen will blank out for a moment (as is expected) then displays that it is
still in 1024x768 and asks if I want to keep the current settings (which are
exactly the same as before).
