Boot from the new, valid XP CD and do a repair install. This process will
ask for the CD key and then do its thing. When it finishes you will then
register and activate.

You can install over the original copy but to reduce the risk of errors
I would suggest you format your drive fist witch you can do by starting
your computer from the xp cd. |

Just do the Repair Installation - It will work fine and your data will still
be intact.

Especially since they will probably give the person an OEM disk. Can OEM
versions do a repair install?

Absolutely--the only exception is recovery cds that use image files instead
of the actual installer.

Michael:
I followed your FAQ #18......
I got to where it shows xppid.zip and when I click it to
download, I get a message saying it isn't there.
I filed a query on this .... here in this forum.....
on 4/14/06 ...... and I tried sending you an email
direct to what I thought was your address, and it bounced.
Please advise.

If I were you, I would make darned sure I uninstalled & reformatted all my
disks b-4 I installed the new version with the right key...I don't understand
microsofts policy on OEM replacement disks...they are the supplier...I build
my own pc's & used to buy a copy of OEM with every new motherboard...MS says
only aftermarket disks are replaceable...rhis is the 3rd version of XP OEM
i've had to buy...its supposed to be replaceable for $26.00 + tax...even from
oem's...but microsoft could give a damn...although the world runs on ms
products...I also have a $636.00
(or some thing like that microsoft for small business server, a set of
6disks, + 1 Extra disk called service pak 3 (2000 edition).but althugh its
installed, i'm using domino server right now.
