I recently installed updates to XP and one of them causes
difficulties with one of the programs that I have to run
on my system. I am a new XP/PC user and do not know how
to remove the update (I am having a problem resulting
from update KB824145).

Matthew, look in Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs. It maybe listed under
HotFixes. Look for that specific number.
If that doesnt work go to C:\Windows\$NTUninstall Folders. Look for the
correct folder #

Use Add/Remove Programs and select Internet Explorer Update (824145) to
uninstall it.

You may want to read the security document on the update though (URL
below). It is considered a "critical" update and you may prefer to leave
this installed for that reason. The article also includes a phone number to
call Microsoft with the notation "there is no support charge for support
calls associated with security updates.
