| Greetings, whilst poking around looking for the cause of a slow boot up, I
discovered the following entry in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg\dvd43
Interestingly, the program dvd43 was uninstalled recently. How can I
temporarily (or preferably permanently) [and SAFELY] remove this entry to see
if it has anything to do with the slow boot up. The Grey Nomad.

The "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg" key is for
disabled System Configuration Utility (msconfig) startup entries under the
Startup tab. Since you have uninstalled the program for "dvd43" then you can
safely remove the "dvd43" key.
I would suggest exporting the "dvd43" key to a folder of your choice before
the deleting the key. Right-click on the "dvd43" key and select Export. Now
you will have a exported/backup copy of the "dvd43" key and its values. To
import the key back, simply right-click the exported file and choose Merge.

Do one of two things:
If there is a Command associated with it, change part of the pathname to
become invalid. Then Windows will not be able to find it to start.
Or
Export the dvd43 key, delete it. If everything checks out, leave it
deleted. If not, import the file you exported it to back into the registry.
DId you ever play with msconfig and turn dvd43 on/off? This may just be a
remnant of that time.

MS Knowledgbase worried me into not touching the registry but your opinions
gave me the courage to go ahead. The result is .. the entry has gone and all
is well. However it did not affect the slow boot up and I shall continue to
poke about. PS. Yes, I did play with MSconfig whilst looking for the cause
of the slow bootup.
