Taskbar Icons

Anyone.

Does anyone know how to make windows XP function the same as previous
versions have done on the task bar.

I want the icons to get progressively smaller the more applications I open.
At the moment, when I get to a certain amount open it then opens those stupid
little cevrons that I detest so much. I want them all to show in the same
place.

I have already reduced the size of the caption buttons but this hasn't made
any real difference

See if this helps:
Right click the taskbar.
Click Properties.
Under the Taskbar tab uncheck "Lock the taskbar" and " Group similar
taskbar buttons".
Click Apply > Ok.
