obviously there are
some variables involved.

firstly, there must have been
a problem with the o.s. that
encouraged you to attempt
a restore.

secondly, the attempt to
restore failed as well.

my suggestion is to use
your windows cd and
repair your operating system.

it will repair any damaged or
corrupted system files and then
create a fresh new restore point.

here are the instructions:

Don't bother. Disable System Restore.

It's a waste of HD space and of computer ressources. In fact disable
all the useless stuff that Microsoft has running in the background.
Set up Windows Updates to notify you before downloading or installing
anything. Take back control of your computer.

To protect yourself against disasters, backup your system when it's
working properly with some disk imaging program, it will be far more
useful in case of some problem than System Restore.

Have you tried an earlier System Checkpoint, or do they all behave the same
way?

Are you logged in as an Administrator?

Do you have enough disk space available to process the restore point?

Do you have external devices attached when you are attempting this
operation?

Actually System Restore is very useful for fixing a registry related
screwup by the operator.
