G'Day All,
My PC Sound System works with Windows Media and iRiver players,
and tests ok with dxdiag.
Game Sounds play correctly.
However, it no longer plays System Sounds.
In the Control Panel Applet, I see the expected list of sounds, I can select
different sounds, but the 'Play' button is disabled (I can play the sounds with
WMP 10 if I use Explorer). The Sound device is selected on the Audio and
Voice Tabs.
Although the 'Place volume icon in the taskbar' box is checked, the control
no longer appears in the System Tray.
I have a TV Card that also fails to play Sounds as it did previously.
Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thanks Will, but...
I'm going quietly nuts...
I've re-installed the sound drivers, applied all of Kelly's tweaks and the
Status is still Quo - No System Sounds (including Office Sounds), no
TV tuner sound.
I CAN listen to CDs, watch DVDs etc., etc......

G'Day Michael,
No (Don't know what I did)... and then again Yes (Everything now works)!
None of Kelly's tweaks helped, and I eventually lost ALL sound....long story.
Two things seemed to help...
Uninstall the Sound drivers (cold reboot - cancel New Hardware Wizard)
Uninstall the Sound device (cold reboot - cancel New Hardware Wizard)
After several sessions (and cold reboots) and no sound, I re-installed the
drivers
and everything worked.
(By cold reboot I mean shutdown to power off for 10s minimum then power up
and restart). HTH!

just trying to help
After a Win update last year, same thing happened to me.
I ended up spending a wk on this issue, and then went to Cntl
Panel,Sounds-Audio, and made a new sound scheme and saved/applied. That
worked..... |
