I reinstalled vista on my desktop and now when it starts up the left side of
everything is cut off no matter what monitor i use. I tried to change the res
but it gives me an "invalid signal" until it resets itself. Can anyone help
me fix this?

set it to a resolution and refresh rate that your video card and monitor can
handle...which is shown on the same page as the changes you are trying to
make.
You did install the proper Vista video driver for your video card.......????
With so many video technologies on the market today it also would have been
helpful so list the video card and monitor that you are using as well as the
resolution /refresh rate that you are trying to achieve

When you reinstalled vista, the video drivers would have been wiped.
Go to the Card's manufacturer's website; download latest driver.
Also, check the monitor settings.
