Post subject: Safely Remove Hardware icon.. HELP !
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>hardware (more info?)

Hello..
I've got to seek help to solve two problems :
1- I turn on my HP Printer. Then the Safely Remove Hardware(SRH) little
green icon appears at the system tray. Then when I want to turn my Printer
off, I have to click on the SRH icon and then click on the "STOP" button
allowing me to "Safely Remove...", thus, I should be able to turn off my
Printer. If I turn off my Printer without using the SRH icon, a sound is
heard letting me know that a device has been unplugged which makes me think
that I will eventually MESS UP my computer. The PROBLEM is that when hitting
on the "Stop" button in the SRH, a screenshot comes up that says "Your HP
Officejet 6210 cannot be stopped because another application is using it." I
don't have another application running !
2- Since I don't have another choice other than turn off my Printer without
using the SRH, the "Device Unplugged" sound is heard. A few days ago, I was
able to turn off my Printer normally after I used the SRH icon. However -and
this is basically the other problem- the "You can now safely remove..."
message was not displayed and the "Unplugged device" sound was also heard
anyway.
If I explained myself clear enough and anyone has an idea what I am talking
about...would you please help me solve this issue ?
In advance, thanks a lot for your nice feedback on this concern.
RAUL75.

I am not an expert, but I do have three HP printers hanging off of two
computers. One of 'em is a officejet 6110, which I bet is a close cousin to
your 6210.

Anyways, my thought is for you to use SRH to unplug your 6210, then
uninstall all the software that came with the printer. Then reinstall
everything, just as if you had bought the printer new.

One note: after uninstall -- and before your re-install -- use Windows
Explorer to find any residual folders and/or files related to the original HP
6210 install. That should make your re-install cleaner. [These files/folders
might be hidden, so, in Windows Explorer, go to Tools>Folder Options>View
tab, and activate 'Show hidden files and folders'. Don't forget to click
'OK.']

I have been having trouble with HP's software ever since I installed
Internet Explorer 7. HP's support said there was a known problem with IE7.
For a time, I just uninstalled IE7, and things were OK. Then HP came out with
a supposed fix, which I installed, then reinstalled IE7, but things have
never been the same.

Hope this helps. Post a reply if this helps. -- Wayne
