Hi,
Looking for some help re sp2 installation.
Have now made three attempts, all failed ending in a 'cannot continue error'.
When I run the update it almost runs to completion, but stops at the
'Finishing / clean up' stage.
Then I get the error box which gives me the following details:
AppName: Update.exe
AppVer:5.5.1005.0
ModName:ntdll.dll
ModVer:5.1.2600.1217
Offset:0055e92

This message is allways the same, with the same offset point.

I have researched this and had some advice from various sources.
I have created a new Software Distribution Folder
I have downloaded the full SP2 file and used that
I have run several spyware / malware scans with differing applications (some
forum info suggests malware as a possible cause !)
I have taken all applications out of startup folder and run with a minimal
startup configuration.
I have run chkdsk

So far every attempt gives me the same error and I then uninstall the
service pack and go back to square one.

I would be grateful to hear of any bright ideas which I might try onn this
one.

Hi Peter,
Your download get corrupted by somehow, either by your Anti-Virus or other
applications installed on your computer.
Here are some steps to perform:
... Open Windows explorer and locate this paths:
C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribute = Delete all Sub-Folders in the right
Pane/Window.
.... C:\Windows\Temp\Temporary Internet Files = Delete all Temp there.
.... Perform a Disk Cleanup
.... Perform a Check Disk
.... Open a Run Command and type in:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and let it run, it will take a while.

.... Disable your antivirus Firewall.
..... Install SP2 from the links Below:
Windows XP Service Pack 2 Network Installation Package - Final Version (RTM)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
http://support.microsoft.com/windowsxpsp2
Then Defrag your System.
= If still no joy then perform a Repair/Install of XP:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm
HTH.
Let us know.

Have now tried all your suggestions apart from 'repair/install' - guess what
? the problem is still there !!
Had a look at the repair/install link you provided and am a little bit
unsure at this stage. There appear to be a lot of caveats / warnings of
possible problems. I'm going to need more time to study the options in detail
and decide how to tackle it.
Thanks for all your help. I'll get back with any further progress in due
course
