Post subject: SLOW DIRECTORY
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>basics (more info?)

I have noticed recently that from My Documents working down through
sub-directories that it takes a much longer time from the mouse click to get
to and open a sub-directory. Once in that directory the files and/or other
sub-directory come up right away. Specifically from My Documents to the 1st
directory is fast, but then to the 2nd directory under the 1st it takes much,
much longer, but becomes fast again after getting into the 2nd directory.
I have cleaned the C drive and have run defragmenter on it and there is no
improvement. I have turned off the virus protection program, still no change.
Any ideas on what to look for would be helpful.

Tom

How many files ( including sub-directories ) are there in the slow
drectory? How long are the file names?

You might try increasing the setting for Folders to remember from the
default 400.

Download and install Power Toy TweakUi
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.mspx

In TweakUi select Explorer, Customisations and you will see an easy
way
to increase / decrease the default registry setting.

Hope this helps.

GERRY. I TRIED THE TWEAK AND IT DID NOT FIX THE PROBLEM. (However, it seem
like a neat tool - thanks.)
I STARTED TO DIVIDE UP THE DIRECTORY THAT WAS SLOW, I.E., PUTTING ALL IN A
TEMP THEN MOVING EACH DIRECTORY BACK INTO THE EMPTY ONE. WHAT I FOUND WAS A
BAD SHORTCUT. ONE BAD SHORTCUT SLOWED DOWN THE WHOLE THING.
BEFORE THAT I RAN VARIOUS "CLEAN-UP" PROGRAMS, BUT I GUESS THEY DON'T LOOK
FOR BAD SHORTCUTS.

Tom

Which clean up programs so Iwe can mark their card <G>?

The problem with using a clean-up programme is that you either rely on
the automatic detection being reliable or you have a mass of entries
to try to figure out what they means. If you take the first path you
risk a disastrous outcome. If you adopt the second approach you can
get bogged down under a pile of trivia. Many experts argue that
cleaning up using a cleanup utility is a waste of user time and
effort. I sit on the fence and watch,

Please don't post all in caps as it is considered to be shouting and
contrary to established nettiquette.

Thanks for reporting the outcome.
