Post subject: SFC problem
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>windowsxp>configuration_manage (more info?)

I just did a SFC /SCANNOW and got the message that a file was wrong and
was instructed to insert my Windows XP CD service pack 1. Well, my Dell
computer came with Windows XP - Home preinstalled, and I had since
downloaded the SP1 from Microsoft, so I am at a loss as to what/how to
comply with the instructions.

My reason for this scan in the first place was a small encryption
program that I have failed to run, giving me a message which included a
problem with the ntdll.dll file. I did manage to find in
Windows/lastgood/system32/dllcache folder the ntdll.dll file and
copied/pasted it to the Windows/ServicePackFiles/i386 folder, but my
encryption program still does not run.

Anyway, back to my original question, how/what do I do when after runnig
the SFC scan I am instructed to insert Windows XP CD service pack 1?

Thanks for your patience and any help/thoughts/suggestions you might have.

You should be able to point to the SP1 file located in
C:\Windows\ServicePackFiles\I386

Thanks Jerry. However, I'm not sure exactly how to do that. When I get
the message from SCF when it is about 7/8 the way through, it pops up a
box which says "Insert Windows XP Service Pack 1 CD now" and really
doesn't give an option to type in a path or a way to "point" to the SP!
file. Are you talking about maybe changing something in the Registry?

Thanks!!!! Smile

Hi, Michael,

Sorry to be so late replying,
It's been a while since I used SFC, but I thought there was a window that
showed where you could type in the file source path

Anyway, you might check the following to see if the ServicePackFiles are in
the Registry.

In Regedit, Click Hkey_Local_Machine,
Software,
Microsoft,
Windows NT,
Current Version,

In the right panel, look for - CSDVersion REG_SC Service Pack 1

It should locate it automatically, but you can change the Source Path to
point at C:\windows\servicepackfiles\ ( don't add the I386 folder)

Caution, be sure to create a Restore Point before you edit the Registry, so
if you need to, you can restore the Registry.
..

Good Luck,
Jerry

Thanks so much, Jerry, for your response. I found the CSDVersion in
the Registry. However, it said Reg_SZ rather than Reg_SC. Not sure if
it is supposed to say that or you had a typo. I assume the latter as
all the others in my registry right there had _SZ.

Anyway, the SoucePath just said c: I did change it to the path, and
all seems well again. Thanks so much for your help! I appreciate it.
